After years of teaching people and reading the research on this topic, I've stumbled across a mistake that guarantees an almost 100% failure rate when learning any skill. Unfortunately, this is a mistake that most people make every single day. I call this mistake "theory overload," and I think it is one of the most important concepts to understand when you're trying to learn any new skill. Today I'm going to talk about a trend or cycle that we've seen in the database marketplace and database industry over the last couple of decades. It seems that every so often, people come along and say they have a brand new database technology, a brand new way to think about how to store data. What they don't realize is that they are essentially rediscovering and reinventing concepts that have been invented in the past but had been discarded due to poor ideas. Then, those ideas come back around, and we realize, "Oh yeah, it was a mistake," and this cycle just keeps repeating itself. Specifically, I'm going to discuss how people reinvent data models for databases and why we keep seeing this pattern of making the same mistakes over and over again. So, first, what is a data model? For this audience, I don't think I need to define it in detail, but essentially, it is the way you express or represent how data is going to be stored, accessed, and manipulated within a conceptual framework in a database system.

I felt that there needs to be more investors who are genuinely passionate about technology. I believe the biggest breakthrough for me personally is that it's really simple.
Professor Charles D. All right. We've been talking about arguments that might give us reason to believe in the existence of an immaterial soul. The kinds of arguments we've been considering so far all fall under the general rubric of inference to the best explanation. We posit, or the proponents of souls posit, the existence of souls in order to explain something that needs explaining about us. Now, I've gone through a series of such arguments, and the one that we ended with is the need to believe in the existence of a soul in order to explain the fact that we have free will.
We've been discussing the question: what arguments might be offered for the existence of a soul? The family of arguments we are considering initially are known as inferences to the best explanation. The idea is that there is something about us that requires explanation. We cannot explain it purely in physical terms, so we need to appeal to, or posit the existence of, a soul. I will return to that argument shortly, but for now, let me set that aside and say something about Plato.
Today, we're going to continue the discussion where we left off last time. We were talking about two main positions regarding the question, "What is a person?" On the one hand, we have the dualist view. That's the perspective we spent a fair bit of time exploring during our last meeting. The dualist view posits that a person consists of a body and a soul; strictly speaking, we should say that the only part essential to the person is the soul, although it has a rather intimate connection to a particular body.
So, now the next question is: What is chemical reaction engineering? Chemical reaction engineering, okay, we will abbreviate it. This is a wonderful question. Do you have a definition for this? What is chemical reaction engineering? That is the question. Well, some of these concepts we understand, but we often struggle to explain them clearly. It's similar to legal terminology. Chemical reaction engineering isn’t so bad, but the definition itself—the title "chemical reaction engineering"—provides a good insight. Essentially, you are engineering the chemical reactions, and that is a solid definition.

I've never been in the purely symbolic camp. If you go back to my earliest writing about program synthesis, I was saying we need deep learning-guided program synthesis. We need a merger of intuition and pattern recognition together with discrete step-by-step reasoning and search into one single data structure. I have said very repeatedly, for the past eight years or so, that human cognition is a mixture of intuition and reasoning, and that you're not going to get very far with only one of them. You need the continuous kind of abstraction that's provided by vector spaces and deep learning models in general, as well as the more discrete symbolic kind of abstraction provided by graphs and discrete search.

Knowledge work can be broken down into four steps.

You may remember Turbo RAC from October 2024; it was a novel RAC system that utilized pre-computing and the storage of key-value caches for documents for the first time. They told us, "Hey, we are 10 times faster than any classical RAC system." Now, in December 2024, just four days before Christmas, we have a new publication: "Don't do RAC anymore, when Cache-Augmented Generation (CAG) is all you need for your knowledge tasks."

Hello! Today we're going to talk about AI agents. It's a topic everyone seems to want to discuss. I've spent a lot of time over the last couple of months just getting my head around things. I have really summarized it down to this.
Another season of Survivor is done; this time, it is Survivor 47 in the books, wrapped up. Quite an interesting ride, to say the least—a season I was pretty excited for. The cast seemed genuinely intriguing, and following Survivor 45, which I loved, and Survivor 46, which a lot of other people loved, I felt like this season could be great and continue in those footsteps. In the end, after 14 episodes, did Survivor 47 deliver for me? Not necessarily. While I don't think this is a bad season by any means, I also don't consider it an all-time great. At the same time, I hear a lot of discourse about people loving this season while watching, and for me, it just felt all right. I was never fully invested in this season when it came to the cast, the editing, or just an overarching theme. Overall, something felt off, and I don't think it was production this time. Even if they've been the culprits in many other seasons, I think they made a lot of great decisions and are slowly but surely bringing Survivor back to what I love. They seem to realize that what they were doing in the new era wasn't working. While not everything is going to be perfect—fire-making challenges are going to stay here forever—I think Survivor is on a great path. I truly believe that with a great cast and a great season, we can get some all-time Survivor classics.

I want to talk about dbt and Looker today and make the case for why I think they work so well together, both in features and what they bring to your data team, with a focus on governance and, in particular, on data trust, which I believe will be a common theme. I'll return to this point without sacrificing agility. So, with that, I'm going to jump in and introduce myself a little. I'm Jonathan, or JB's fine. I lead solutions architecture at Four Mile.
What is Modern Monetary Theory? You cannot take part in a discussion about economics these days without hearing the term Modern Monetary Theory come up. It's important to understand what it is, because a great deal that is said about MMT, as I will refer to it throughout this video, is complete nonsense. Some of its supporters don't help MMT by making claims about it that are frankly entirely unfounded and even untrue. Almost everything said about it by its opponents is, let's be honest, largely a work of fiction, because they want to, for reasons that are not apparent to me, deny the truth implicit within it. There is, in fact, very little about MMT that is either very radical, new, or unusual.

I just finished a conversation with Devin Erickson, who recently gained significant attention on Twitter and social media for his harsh truths and deeply articulate insights. He is also the author of a new science fiction book titled *Theft of Fire*. No, they work by manipulating our emotions, creating a subconscious association between their product and some positive emotion or idea. This theory is popular, but it is wrong. Not only does advertising not typically work in this emotion-based way, I will argue that it never works this way.

Okay, so many of you will know Pydantic. Pydantic is basically a validation library that allows you to build classes to check whether your data conforms to a particular class or data model. Originally, it was used with APIs to clarify that the inputs coming into the API were correct and that the outputs being returned were also correct. You can define a schema for what you wanted as input and what you wanted as output, as you can see here. This made it much simpler to perform this kind of task in Python.

About a week ago, I started using a new AI code editor called Windsurf. Up to this point, I had been using Cursor for about eight or nine months, so I am very comfortable and familiar with it. However, this new editor has some really cool features that I wanted to check out. I aimed to compare the two editors and highlight some of the differences between them, as well as provide recommendations on when to use one over the other. In planning this video, I realized that I needed a better way to evaluate various AI code editors, so I came up with the Volo Score, which is a set of evaluation criteria for AI coding tools. It is not even a competition. Right now, Windsurf is hands down the best AI IDE. It combines the best of both worlds. It's very easy to collaborate with it as a co-pilot, but it's also able to perform a lot of long-running and complex coding tasks as an agent. And because of that, I have a confession to make.
It looks like there is a new autonomous AI agent framework that can almost do anything. Allow me to introduce AI Engineer. AI Engineer is a framework that is part of the Chat LLM application, where you can simply configure your agent based on your needs, and it will fully autonomously execute your tasks for you. For example, if I want to build a frontend builder agent, I can go to Chat LLM, navigate to the top, and select AI Engineer. From there, I can create an AI agent by simply describing what I want in custom specifications.
I think we are also on time, so let's get started. We are now at the end of a very long day, at least the conference part, so hopefully I can keep you awake during this last talk. This is a good book. In "The New Economics," Steve Keen methodically pulls apart the ideas underpinning neoclassical economics from a number of different angles. One of the key themes is that the linear mathematics of neoclassical ideas, such as supply and demand curves, create a false impression of our economy as naturally tending towards equilibrium. A more accurate description and mathematics would resemble the kind of non-linear equations that give rise to the endlessly dynamic behaviors of the strange attractor of the Lorenz equations. In this video, I will provide a high-level summary of some of the major flaws of neoclassical economics that Keen lays out. Roughly echoing the structure of the book, we will explore how money is created, model the complexity of the economy, examine the role of energy, and discuss the fascinating gap between the rhetoric and mathematics of neoclassical economics.

Alright, so it looks like we finally got Drake speaking on the whole Kendrick Lamar situation, right? We all saw back in April that these two started dropping diss tracks after J. Cole released his song "8-Minute Freestyle," where he pretty much took shots at everybody. J. Cole later retracted that song and deleted it from the internet, but it said Drake was on fire. Drake was on those records talking about "drop, drop, drop, drop, drop, drop, drop," and it was going his way for a little while. Then Kendrick actually dropped, and he dropped and he dropped, and Drake has been pretty much silent since then. Other than the occasional Instagram troll, we really have not heard Drake speak on the situation at all. In public opinion, as far as I can tell, Kendrick won that battle going on between them. Now, me personally, I think it was a healthy competition. I enjoyed the music from both sides, but that's just me. Anyway, Drake has been relatively silent on this entire situation. He’s dropped no music since then and hasn’t done any interviews discussing it—none of that. But that all changed yesterday when Drake went on a stream with this streamer, xQc. I’ve heard of xQc before; isn’t he the dude that was like super lazy with content creation? Everyone was talking about how all he does is sit there and let other people's content play. Anyway, he’s on stream with this dude xQc for what reason, I don’t know. Why is he on stream with this guy? He’s got nothing to do with hip-hop. But during this stream, Drake took just a moment to address Kendrick Lamar. I guess I should give a little intro like, “Um, I'm Drake; this is xQc, a real streaming legend. Me? I do music in case you didn’t know. I’m here, as you can see, fully intact.” Oh no, Drake got this so foul; he’s having to reintroduce himself, bro. I’m dead. I’m here, as you can see, fully intact.
